Frequently Asked Questions

Some of these questions have been asked, and some are intended to stave off the inevitable (and annoying) predictable questions.

Q: Why are you Doing This?

A: Because Scotland deserves better. Our nation is an amazing place with great people and incredible potential. We want to be free, and that includes being free of religious interference in our lives. When we hear Cardinal Keith O'Brien call for Scotland to be "re-christianised" (whatever that means), it sends a chill down our spines

Q: Are you Anti-Religious?

A: Yes.

Some Atheists don't want to bash religion, and prefer a path of Universal tolerance. That just isn't us - religion is a virus of the mind, passing intolerance, hate and ignorance from generation to generation.

Q: Did Religious people do bad stuff to you as Kids or something?

A: To our knowledge, none of our members are amongst the small, but worrying, number of children physically or sexually abused by the religious. That's not to say that teaching children a morality that's based on an eternal bogeyman, or to hate people because of their sexuality isn't a form of mental abuse.

Q: Your Logo is wrong.

A: Although that's not a question, you are quite right. For the sake of looking better on the webpage, Shetland appears a little closer to the mainland than it actually is.

Q: Are You spreading Hate?

A: Yes.

Religion is something to be hated, despised even. Countless thousands have died because of religion - and many more have endured terrible suffering. Of course, it's important to point out that Hatred of Religion is not the same thing as Hatred of religious people. We do not hate believers, ministers of religion, and so on. As for Politicians who suck up to the Religious to win votes... no comment.

Q: I have the freedom to practice my religion. Are you trying to take that away?

A: No. The Scottish Atheist Council absolutely respects the right of an individual to practice their religion - and also respects the right of the rest of society to laugh at them and ridicule them for it.

but...no religion has a special right to dictate Government Policy, to demand that children are brainwashed into believing their ridiculous views, or any other concession. You have the right to practice a religion. You do not have the right to special treatment, your own laws, or to demand respect for your nutty beliefs.
